Sulfur Recovery Unit (SRU) Temperature Monitoring by INFRARED Radiation Pyrometer

Uninterrupted Temperature measurement of Gas Temperature, Refractory Temperature and Integrated Temperature.

What is the Sulfur Recovery Unit (SRU)?

Sulfur recovery refers to the conversion of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) to elemental sulfur. Hydrogen sulfide is a by-product of processing natural gas and refining high-sulfur crude oils. The Sulfur Recovery Unit (SRU) is an extremely important unit in the Refinery or Gas Plant. Sulfur is recovered in the sulfur plant using Thermal reactor process and it is known as Clause process.

The Claus process is used to convert H2S to valuable elemental sulfur and to minimize the amount of sulfur compounds released to the atmosphere. Temperature inside the SRU reaches to 1100 to 1400°C and at the boiler outlet, temperature is around 300°C.

Temperature Measurement in SRU :

Earlier Thermocouple were used to measure the temperature of Clause thermal reactor refractory but due to the corrosive acid gases and high temperatures in the thermal reactor, thermocouple corrodes and unable to provide Accuracy & long term reliability.

The AST SRU FO is a two channel detector (Wavelength) model for measurement of refractory temperature, gas temperature and smart hybrid temperature. It is a highly accurate digital Fibre Optic industrial IR Pyrometers, for non-contact temperature measurement in demanding applications. SRU pyrometers can easily differentiate the Refractory & Gas surface by using Multiple wavelength technology. Specific wavelength can penetrate the gas flame and measure the refractory surface temperature and specific wavelength measure the Gas temperature.

Challenge :

Temperature control is critically important for operational effectiveness, reactor longevity by measuring refractory lining and Gas temperature.
